  • News and Review

A friend is starting up a women's running club in Hoboken for beginner and experienced runners. They will be leading runs Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings. You can find out more at Elysianettes or send an email to elysianettes@gmail.com

Due to disagreements with the City I have decided to make the remaining Saturday classes "mobile classes." We will meet as usual at Pier A at 8:00 am and class will move around town from there.

With one month remaining of outdoor classes I am planning another breakfast at The Turning Point on Sunday October 12th (rain date Oct. 19th). Join me for a great workout and then kick back and share some stories over breakfast.

    The Best Time to Exercise

Ever wonder when the best time is to exercise? In reality it's best to find a time you can set aside consistently for your workouts. But there are actually pros and cons to working out at certain times of the day. Research shows that morning workouts are best to build consistent habits. Physiologically the best time to work out for both strength and endurance is late in the afternoon.

    Stress and Weight Gain

Everyday stress from work and life has a way of creping up on us. Add on a weak economy, rising costs of living, and questions on Wall Street and stress can become chronic. What you may not realize is how chronic stress can affect your health and lead to weight gain. Stress releases Coritsol which, under chronic stress conditions can build up and slow your metabolism.

    Running Resources

With so many people interested in running these days I am working on adding additional resources to assist you. If you don't already know about it USATF has a running route planner. You can view previously created routes or simply create your own. It's easy to use and removes any questions you have about the distance of your run. Check out a few Hoboken runs below:

    Hoboken University Medical Center 5K

The 2008 Hoboken University Medical Center 5K is scheduled to be held Saturday, Oct. 11th in Pier A Park. The 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. from Pier A, followed by a 2-mile river walk at 9:20 a.m. with "kids' dashes" at 10 a.m. for 2- to 12-year-olds.

There will also be free parking for race participants at Garage B on 2nd and River streets.

You can register online for the race: It's $15 to enter if you're a USATF-NJ member. For everyone else, it's $20 before October 1 and $25 after October 1 or on Race Day. Kids' Dashes are $10/$15.

    Important Dates:

On Saturday, October 11th there will be no Boot Camp classes or Personal Training because I will be attending a continueing education seminar. If you are looking for something to do check out the 5k race in Hoboken mentioned above.
